The sensational discovery in 1991 of “Ötzi,” the man in the ice, serves as an impressive indication of human activity in alpine regions beginning after the last ice age. The first inhabitants of the area were hunters and only later turned to animal husbandry in the alpine areas. Numerous archeological finds in the Nature Park, especially around Obergurgl, tell us today the unique story of settlement of the Ötz valley from ancient times. Multi-lingual (D/E/I) copper trail signs provide information on nature and cultural history of the area. This network is still updated and expanded.
