The protected area includes a large part of the Stubai Alps and reaches from the eastern Ötz valley down to Ranalt in the Stubai valley. The protected area “Kalkkögel” in the Northeast borders the “Serles – Habicht – Zuckerhütl” protected landscape in the Southeast.
Carved from crystallized stone, the ridges and valleys offer a diverse and charming backdrop of natural scenery. The central area is dominated by glaciers (eg. Breiter Grieskogel and others). Without the assistance of lifts or cable cars, numerous popular backcountry skiing, mountaineering, and rock climbing routes lead to challenging summits and glaciers. About 12% of the area is covered by glaciers which shape the landscape with their impressive lateral and terminal moraines.
