Dark mullein

(Verbascum nigrum)

In the first year, this plant can be found close to the ground as a strong rosette of leaves. Only in the second year does the striking, tall inflorescence develop, on which the numerous yellow flowers bloom one after the other, starting from the bottom. Dried inflorescences are natural nesting and hibernation sites for insects.

Appearance:

  • Vigorous rosette of leaves in the first year
  • In the second year, tall inflorescence with many yellow single flowers that bloom one after the other starting from the bottom

Possible uses:

  • Flowers as a cough remedy, as they contain mucilage and triterpene saponins
  • Pollen and nectar plant for insects
  • Seeds for birds in autumn
  • Dead inflorescences as a nesting aid for wild bees
