Because of devastating outbursts from glacial lakes in the past, the glaciers in the Ötz valley have been of great interest to many acclaimed experts. Today, the Hintereis glacier and the Vernagt glacier South of Vent are the subject of numerous glacial investigations.
The University of Innsbruck has conducted research on the Hintereis glacier for over 60 years, whereas the Commission for Glaciology of the Bavarian Academy of Science www.glaziologie.de has studied the Vernagt glacier since 1964. The Vernagt Creek gauging station was built in 1973 and continually monitors the glacier’s drainage.
